Cookbooks Throughout History: Foodie Treasure Troves

(Author’s note: keep in mind that the word “recipe” came from the word “receipt,” which you will see used in early books.)

Our fascination with cookbooks has virtually no limit. Celebrity chefs make millions on their beautifully illustrated cookbooks, many of which are never really used other than for fantasy. And basic classics like Better Homes & Gardens, Betty Crocker or Pillsbury will always sell. But before the nineteenth century, if a young woman or servant wasn’t taught culinary skills growing up, she was in for a rough trial-and-error period as she found herself pressed into service with a new husband and growing family. If she was able to read, she might find a few well-worn stained pages to consult but that was the extent of it.

Early cookbooks were for the wealthy only (especially royalty) and most of the castle kitchen staff couldn’t read. Of course very early cookbooks proved to be a bit daunting for the average farmer’s wife, like Forme of Cury (14th century) by the Master Cooks of King Richard II of England. Seems the portions were a tad overwhelming and one meal might require spending an entire year’s food budget for the average peasant. In Germany and England many of the books were written by women, who saw what was needed in households with fewer or no servants, and understood what made it possible to simplify the dishes with less expensive ingredients.

So for basic bona fide cookbooks, here are some which stand out, many of which are still in publication today:

Hannah Glasse’s The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy (1747) was the top selling English-language cookbook for over a century, and had a major influence on early American cooking; even Martha Washington had a copy in her Mount Vernon kitchen;

Martha Bradley, in the 1756’s wrote The British Housewife taking recipes from earlier books but reworking them in her own personal style;

Fifteen Cent Dinners for Working-Men’s Families was published in New York in the late 1870s, and similar books could be found at the same time across Europe, a bit more practical for the average laborer. Presumably, creative ways to prepare poor man’s potatoes and turnips gave way to meats and fresh vegetables (hot dogs and boxed mac and cheese had not made their appearance yet);

Amelia Simmons’ American Cookery (1796) one of the first cookbooks printed in America, it made a significant impact on American colonials after the Revolutionary War;

Mary Randolph’s The Virginia Housewife (1824) still considered one of the best for authentic southern cuisine, it includes recipes for barbecued pork, okra soup, and numerous other traditional southern recipes (her brother was married to the daughter of first foodie president Thomas Jefferson, which didn’t hurt);

Lydia Marie Child’s The Frugal Housewife (1829), although a slim volume, it was popular with pioneers and light travelers, as it emphasized affordable, available foods (after all, there were no supermarkets on the frontier);

Eliza Leslie’s Directions for Cookery, In Its Various Branches (1837) the author of several volumes in the nineteenth century, her culinary fame began in 1828 with the publication of Seventy-Five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats, a veritable bible for foodies with sweet tooths; inspiration came largely from the cooking school of Mrs. Goodfellow, a celebrated baker in Philadelphia;

The Confederate Receipt Book: A Compilation of Over One Hundred Receipts, adapted during the Civil War (1863) when Naval blockades prevented many foods from reaching the South,where growing cotton and tobacco was far more common than food;

Charles Ranhofer’s The Epicurean (1894) for over a century Delmonico’s Restaurant in New York City was the epitome of find dining during the late Victorian period, hosting dinners for presidents like Ulysses S. Grant, and writers like Charles Dickens; known for their unique and ornate presentations, the most elaborate of dishes were prepared under the masterful eye of chef Charles Ranhofer; this huge heavily-illustrated tome contains mostly classic French recipes;

Fannie Merritt Farmer’s Boston Cooking-School Cook Book (1896), and thanks to her we have detailed, step-by-step instructions in cookbooks that use standardized measurements for ingredients;

Rufus Estes’ Good Things To Eat (1911) his cookbook was preceded by the first from an African American, namely Robert Roberts’ The House Servant’s Directory from 1827, which featured recipes of the wealthy New England families he was accustomed to working for;

Irma Rombauer’s Joy of Cooking (1931) among the best-selling cookbooks in American publishing history, the Joy of Cooking was originally self-published by Mrs. Rombaue, keeping her busy after her husband died, but with its unexpected initial success, she entered into a contract with a publisher;

Landmark books and chefs which have made a major contribution over the last sixty or seventy years include:

Ruth Graves Wakefield, restaurant owner and the creator of the original Toll House cookie, was a popular cookbook writer in the 1930s;

Although more famous for her marijuana-laced brownies, Alice B. Toklas was actually an accomplished cook, and her mid-twentieth century cookbook made a major impression on cooks of the future; Julia Child’s cookbooks changed America’s basic more conservative cuisine;

One of the premier cookbooks of all time, Georges Auguste Escoffier, revered French chef and considered the father of fine French cuisine, published Le Guide Culinaire, in the early years of the 20th century;

Five Fascinating Food Facts That Are Weird

Now, these food facts just might keep you amused, especially for those of you on holiday. Besides you may find one or two so fascinating that you’ll trot them out next time you’re out for dinner, (although I’m not sure if your guests will approve of a couple of them.)

1. In Brazil one of the most popular pizza toppings is peas. Yes, the little green pea. Well, did you know those peas pack a pretty powerful punch? (lots of p’s)

They are not only a great protein source but they’ve got vitamin K, manganese, thiamin, copper, vitamin C, phosphorus and folate. However, their real superpower is that they have a myriad of potent antioxidants including high amounts of a polyphenol called coumestrol – this just may lower your risk of stomach cancer. So don’t just roll those peas around on your plate – dive into them and enjoy their nutritional power.

2: When you buy Virgin Olive Oil you may not be getting exactly what you think. Yup about 70% of the olive oil sold is not actually pure. It’s not that there is another oil added, but the labels lead you to believe you are getting ‘virgin’ or the initial pressing and that’s the best oil to get. Now, in fact, that pure oil has a peppery taste and so the manufacturers would rather sell you oil that is smooth without the pepper – therefore it needs to be processed more. Sometimes the oil will include Lampante Virgin Olive Oil which is, in fact, the lowest grade of virgin olive oil and really not fit for human consumption. In fact, it was originally used as lamp oil but apparently, it takes that peppery taste away.

If you really want the ‘good stuff’ then you need to do your homework – as for me, I’d rather not use oil at all – it’s still a processed food.

3. Did you realise that store-bought 100% ‘real’ orange juice is really 100% artificially flavoured to taste like oranges? You see to make orange juice at home you just squeeze the oranges right? Well to make it commercially you squeeze the oranges but then you have to strip out the oxygen and that’s because you need the liquid to keep for up to a year without spoiling. But now there’s no flavour, so they put the artificial flavour back in.

4. Get prepared for this one if you’re from the West. There is an amusement park in Tokyo, Japan that offers Raw Horse Flesh flavoured ice-cream. I kid you not – there are actual chunks of horse in this ice-cream. And other flavours on offer are cow tongue, octopus and squid.

5. How’s your love of cheese? hopefully, you’re vegan and don’t eat it – but if you do. this is going to tickle the back of your throat. Casu Marzu is a cheese found in Sardinia that is purposely infested with maggots. Casu Marzu literally translates to ‘rotten cheese’ and it’s classified as the world most dangerous cheese.

It’s made from sheep’s milk, soaked in brine, smoked and left to ripen outside in the open, uncovered which allows cheese flies to lay eggs inside it. The eggs hatch into thousands of white transparent maggots and by feeding on the cheese they produce enzymes that promote fermentation and cause fats that make the cheese decompose.

Locals will tell you the spicy, creamy cheese is only okay to eat if the maggots are still moving because once the maggots are dead the cheese has gone bad – decayed to a point that it’s too toxic for human consumption. It’s actually been declared illegal and not in compliance with EU hygienic standards – ha – I wonder why????

Four Type of Spatulas You Can Choose From

Basically, you can choose from 4 types of basic spatulas. Although there are many other types out there, they are not essential to meet your routine needs. Let’s know more about 4 types of spatulas that you may need.

Fish Spatula

Although it seems fussy to opt for a single-use spatula, fish spatulas can be a great choice as they are multi-purpose. They have a long, angular design, which allows you to turn over a fish fillet with ease. You will find it much easier to fit a whole fillet on the turner and no part of the filler will flake off.

As said earlier, you can use this tool to flip pancakes, diner-style omelet, and grilled cheese. Usually, fish spatulas are stainless steel units. Moreover, they are durable and lightweight. However, if you are worried about scratches on its non-stick surface, know that you are out of luck.

However, the good news is that you can buy a pan that won’t damage your non-stick pans. It can withstand temperatures of up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, they are much more suitable for a cast-iron pan.

A scraper is known as a rubber spatula as well. Since this product is not in the conventional flipper shape, you won’t find it easier to use it for moving and turning heavy and solid foods.

However, the good news is that it’s a good choice to prepare soft foods, such as scrambled eggs. This knife-shaped tool features a flat head on one side and a round head on the other side. Therefore, you can use this tool to access corners and scoop up from a mixing bowl or jar.

If you want to purchase a scraper, we suggest that you go for one that’s in one piece. The problem with a model made of different parts is that their wooden handle has a rubber head that may get loose. Actually, this head should be heavy enough so you can stir with ease.

It’s better to go for the GIR type for heat resistance. Plus, they are seamless enough to prevent food from sticking to weird parts. And the good thing is that the GIR types can be found in a lot of fun colors.

Wooden Turner

Wooden turner is a great kitchen workforce. As with the rubber spatula, you should opt for one that is made of the same material, not made of different parts joined together. Also, this is the kitchen tool that will stand the test of time.

When it comes to buying a spatula, we will also discuss models that are suitable for grilling. So, what you need to do is consider two things: a long handle and stainless steel material. Ideally, the length should be between 16 and 19 inches. Aside from this, the folding handle will make it easier for you to store the unit. For instance, you can choose a serrated edge

A Quick Guide on How to Refrigerate Food and Keep It Fresh

Every household has a stock of food staples that are often purchased at the beginning of the month while the perishable food such as the vegetables, dairy products, fruits and meat are purchased in a limited quantity that can be used up within a few days. These products have limited but increased longevity when stored in the refrigerator.

The role of a refrigerator is something that a lot of people ignore and take it for granted. If the refrigerator is not maintained well, the consumers often end up witnessing food damage due to bad or dysfunctional parts in the fridge. Here are some factors listed down for you that determine why there is a difference in food quality when stored in the fridge.

The Time It Has Been in the Market

People are often known to keep a tab on the days that the food has been in the fridge and can decide its goodness accordingly. What they forget is that perishable food comes to the store first and then they get to buy it. Whenever you buy products such as bread, dairy, or processed meat, there is the need to check on the date of manufacturing and accordingly purchase. If it has been in the store for long enough, it won’t stay in good condition once you take it home and expect it to stay fresh thereafter.

The Type of Food That You Intend to Store

When you store food such as meat or dairy products such as milk or probably cheese, you will notice that meat stays longer than that of dairy products. The latter lasts for as much as five days while later going wrong and being unfit for use. You could try storing it in airtight containers and at the back of the shelves where it is a bit more colder. When it comes to the food becoming bad in a day or two, it can also be due to dysfunctional parts of the refrigerator that may need immediate attention from your end.

The Age of the Fridge

There are times when an ill-maintained refrigerator or probably something that has been there for a very long time doesn’t provide enough cooling and protection to the foods that are stored. When that is the case, you get to witness frequent damage to the food that you store no matter what it is. Such problems aren’t with the food but the appliance as a whole where either there is a damaged or dysfunctional part or the need to change the fridge just because it has been there serving you for a long time with it being unable to perform its functions just as it did earlier.

The Way You Store Your Food

Storing warm food in the refrigerator allows it to consume more energy to maintain the temperature and so it is always advised to store food once it is cold. This is also known to decrease the longevity of the fridge while deteriorating in quality with each passing day. Keeping foods covered also saves up on it staying fresh for long.

The Secret Ingredient

Commonly, both renowned chefs, and anyone who possesses the skills to cook, will not accurately part with the complete list of ingredients and/or the method to replicate a recipe for a popular food dish. The reasons for that are many. The acclaimed dish may be a centerpiece on the restaurant menu. The preparer believes that he or she may write a recipe book, and that particular dish might justify value in the book. Perhaps the recipe is a family recipe, handed down from an ancestor (Aunt Lucy).

“Who am I to give away Aunt Lucy’s gift to our family?”

But, there are chefs and meal preparers who seem to be willing to part with the ways and means to craft a coveted dish, but they don’t tell you that they purposely left out or misrepresented a detail. A novice culinary saboteur might muck around with the cooking temperature, but what purpose would there be in ruining the entire dish for an admirer of your cooking? No. Better it is for the vain to omit a single supporting ingredient (a secret ingredient).

“It looks like your dish, but it doesn’t taste the same,” said your admirer. You suggest that there was a lot of humidity that day. “Perhaps the extra juice of atmospheric moisture dampened your talent as you baked Aunt Lucy’s masterpiece.” You don’t dare suggest, “Go ask your Grandma to teach you how to cook!” After all, your admirer suffers by your fault.

Try this recipe: “Roasted Squash, Tamarind Chile Glaze and Crisped Quinoa.” Find the recipe online with that exact search. Suppose that you left out the annatto or the Thai Chile. Would the chef who originated the recipe approve? If you like to keep secrets, pray to God in secret. Web search Matthew 6: 5-8.

You just read a quote from Jesus Christ, written by his disciple, Matthew, who heard him say it. Prayer is your private conversation with God. Web search “The Lord’s Prayer,” which Jesus taught his disciples when they asked him how to pray to God. Think on how God perceives you when you pray to him in secret.

Suppose that your child comes to you crying for something that he or she wants. How do you react? Remember another time, when your child ran to you, hugged you, then looked up into your eyes and said, “I love you!” Consider beginning your secret prayer to God this way, “Father, thank you for your grace in my life.”

Style And Fashion Tips To Help You Look Great

Do you feel like you have to reestablish your fashion sense? Well do you feel like it might cost you too much money? If so then you are going to want to have a look through this article to figure out how to build your fashion sense on a budget.

Buy a variety of jewelry pieces. If you have a good number of colors and styles, you will always have something that matches your outfit. You then will not have to worry about purchasing jewelry to match every outfit that you buy. Think variety and you will have more than one option for an outfit.

Make sure your purse complements the other bags you must carry so that you can look your best. For instance, if you have to carry a purse and briefcase together, they should match each other. In addition, you should avoid carrying more than two visible bags at the same time.

If you are starting to go gray, try using a vegetable dye. As long as it is just a few strands that are causing anxiety, this product should do the trick. It turns the gray a shade that is a tad lighter than the rest of your hair. Using vegetable dye will make it look as though you have nice, new highlights and will then fade out over about three months.

Ask your family how they feel about the way you dress. Tell them that you are considering changing the way you dress and that you would like some constructive feedback from them. They can help you figure out a style that works for you since they know the most about how you’ve dressed your while life.

Save money by shopping online. If you are a fashionista on a budget, check online before you splurge on your wardrobe. There are websites dedicated to deals and coupons that can save you serious cash on clothes by your favorite designers. Shopping online also gives you an easy way to compare prices and ensure you are getting the most bang for your fashion buck.

The color of your skin should determine what color clothing you should wear. If you are very pale, avoid colors that will make you appear paler, like beiges, yellows and whites. On the other hand, if you have darker skin, lighter colors, like light blues, pinks and yellows will compliment your skin.

Before you toss out those beauty product containers, make sure that you have emptied them thoroughly. For tubed products, use a toothpaste tube squeezer to get every last drop. You can turn your bottles upside-down or to their side to get out every little bit of content. Sometimes you can cut off the top to get another two or three uses of the product. You can save tons of money this way.

Keep your clothing after it goes out of style. Clothes come in and out of style very quickly. You can also have them to share with your children for their retro day at school or for Halloween. There are many uses that you will find from the clothes that you keep over the years.

Check new clothing for loose stitching. These threads will only hurt your appearance, so you should get rid of them immediately. You can trim these stitches away carefully with scissors. This easy step will help you make sure your style is right.

If you have “problem” hair, you may be washing it too much. It’s not always a good idea to wash your hair daily. When you do this, you strip natural oils and end up with a chemical buildup on your hair. If you must wash your hair daily, use gentle, natural shampoo and conditioner and don’t scrub your hair. Just stroke the product through it and let it rinse out gently under warm, running water. Allow your hair to air dry rather than blow-drying.

Buy the right size clothing. Too many women wear shirts, skirts, and even bras that are too tight. This is very unflattering. Buying clothing that fits right will have you looking your best. It will also allow you to breathe and be comfortable in what you’re wearing. Part of being fashionable is being at ease with your choices.

Be confident. It doesn’t matter how you dress if you don’t feel that you look good. Work on your self-esteem. Don’t just follow trends. Buy clothing that you feel looks flattering. Trust your own opinion before listening to anyone else. If you feel good about yourself, your confidence should shine through.

Do not hesitate to experiment with new things even if this goes against current fashion trends. Styles can look different on different people. Mix and match to try different styles, materials and colors. You may be able to create something very unique that you look great in.

Compensate for extra weight by wearing solid colors. Darker colors are also your friend; they will make you appear smaller than you are. Light or bright colors can help you visually gain weight.

If you are going to be in the hot weather, wear clothes that are made from natural fabrics so your skin can breath. Cottons and silks are ideal materials for summer clothes. Avoid synthetic fibers, like polyester, that are not as effective in keeping you cool because they tend to stick to you.

If you have a limited budget for clothes, avoid buying clothes that are trendy that will only last you for a season. Fashion fads quickly go out of style, and you will be stuck with clothes that will make you feel like yesterday’s fashion queen. Stick with the classic looks that are timeless.

Try to have your wardrobe consist of 1/5 trendy and 4/5 traditional. Classic pieces that last from year to year will form the foundation of your wardrobe and will support fun seasonal changes. For example, add a colorful new belt to a pair of neutral-colored pants. If that tailored shirt looks a little plain, jazz it up with a bright red scarf.

You see? It really doesn’t cost a lot of money to build your fashion sense. All it takes is proper planning and motivation, and you can figure out how to build your fashion sense on a budget for all of the days ahead of you. Best of luck with your future with fashion.

New Novel Explores World War II in the

Virginia Cantorna’s Dark on the Inside is a long overdue novel. The Philippines is an often-overlooked topic in World War II studies as well as fiction. Dark on the Inside fills that gap wonderfully, and it helps that Cantorna is herself Filipino, her parents being immigrants to Hawaii from the Philippines after World War II. Consequently, Cantorna grew up hearing stories about the war and her ethnic background makes her the perfect person to tell the compelling story of the Ugale family during the Japanese invasion.

Like most Americans, I was largely clueless about the history of the Philippines. Cantorna puts everything into context quickly for readers so they are never confused about events or the political and historical background of the novel. Many may not know that the United States basically conquered the Philippines by taking it from Spain during the Spanish-American War. While the United States promised the Filipinos their independence, instead, it held the Philippines as a colony with a continual promise of self-government until World War II. Then the Japanese invaded the island.

Dark on the Inside opens with the dramatic moment when the Japanese invade. Cantorna, however, rather than giving us a dramatic invasion scene, shows us how the war affects one family who live on another part of the island where the invasion occurs; they learn the news by word of mouth and the radio. The Ugales consist of an aging mother and father, two daughters, Liling and Glory, who are our main characters, and their two brothers, Bartolome, who is married and lives separately from the family, and Felipe “Boy”, who has gone to work in Hawaii. Liling and Glory are both well into their twenties and past the typical age of marriage. Liling has a fiancé, Raul, in the village, while Glory has a secret lover.

The chapters are told in first person by different characters, but primarily, the narrators are the sisters or the men they are in love with. The war quickly intrudes into the characters’ lives when the Ugale sisters go fishing, hoping to catch a glimpse of the man Glory is in love with. A hairy Japanese soldier and his subordinate come to the river to bathe, frightening the girls, and leading to future conflict.

Conflict exists in the girls’ relationships as well, largely spurred on by the role of religion in the village. When Glory finds herself pregnant by her lover and he then disappears, she is forced to endure the shame and guilt the Catholic priest inflicts on her as she tries to raise her son alone. Meanwhile, Liling worries about her fiancé’s safety after he gets a job driving for the US Army.

Cantorna does a wonderful job of peeling back the layers of all the underlying tension in the novel. For example, the Americano doctor holds a high social standing in the community and both Liling and Glory work for him, and yet, they resent that while he is kind to them, he also seems to feel himself superior to the local “Brownies.” The Japanese, however, are far worse and commit horrific atrocities among the Filipinos, including a nighttime attack upon the Ugales’ village, which becomes known as “The Event.”

The Japanese invasion caused US General Douglas MacArthur to leave the Philippines but utter his famous words, “I shall return.” Later in the novel when he does return with troops, the Filipino characters hate the Japanese so much that one of the American-born Japanese soldiers, who works as a translator for the US Army, gets killed by Liling and Glory’s brother because he is mistaken for one of their Japanese enemies.

Throughout the novel, the various characters are deftly portrayed, and amid the horrors of war, we see moments of internal family conflict as well as tender moments, much of which surround Liling and Glory’s father, who tends to beat his wife and adult children, but then gradually becomes more tender as he develops a special relationship with Glory’s son.

Horror as well as hope for a better day pervade the story. The war destroys some of the characters; when they are not getting killed by bullets or bombs, the living nightmares they have witnessed eat away at them until they slowly lose their minds. Others, however, find in the aftermath of the war that a better life may await them if they immigrate to Hawaii.

Altogether, Dark on the Inside is a novel about strong people who have to overcome tragedy to create better lives for themselves. It is a book to put on the shelf beside modern classics like The Color Purple and The Joy Luck Club that also show people dealing with issues of war, racial prejudice, domestic violence, and ultimately, the hope that can spring from times of trauma. I am so glad that Cantorna has given the Philippines and its people their due by writing this novel and bringing alive a piece of World War II that deserves to be remembered and we can all learn from.

Need Help Managing Your Time? Try These Tips And Tricks

As you find yourself needing to take on more tasks, it can be tough to get everything done in a timely manner. It can feel like time is running out and there just isn’t enough time to get everything done. However, you might just require more information about managing your time. Use the tips found in this article to get the most out of every day.

If you’re having a hard time fitting all your tasks into the day, try using a calendar to make things easier. Hang one on your fridge or keep a desk calendar handy at work. Mark your priorities with a given time to get things accomplished and you should be able to operate more efficiently with a little time left over.

Try eliminating distractions in your life if you’re always running out of time for things. For example, it’s difficult to finish a report for your boss if your email is constantly dinging and cell phone always ringing. Turn off technology and learn to tune out distractions. You should be able to focus much better!

Think about which tasks are the most important to get done each day. Tasks which don’t matter shouldn’t take up too much time. By prioritizing your tasks, you can make sure that you effectively spend your energy and time on the tasks that are most important to you. Devise a to-do list, and list the tasks in order of their importance.

To perfect your personal system of time management, take a moment to catalog the most common time-wasting activities you engage in. Whether you prefer to check your e-mail, surf the web, or hang out in the break room, you should identify the behaviors you practice when you’re dodging work. In the future, when you notice yourself initiating these time-wasting processes, stop and remind yourself that you have important work to do!

If time management is a problem for you, one helpful strategy is to create a daily plan for your day before it even unfolds. When you create this plan for your day is totally up to you. Some people like to plan the next day before going to sleep. Other prefer to do it in the morning. After you plan has been made, you need to stick with it the best that you possibly can.

Try to avoid answering the phone or e-mails just because they ring or appear. If you can, try disabling or disconnecting instant messaging. You don’t need to instantly give people attention unless it’s essential to the instant human response aspect of your business. You should try scheduling time for returning calls and answering emails.

Consider not wearing a watch. It sounds counterintuitive to time management, but some people are clock watchers. They get focused on the time, to the detriment of actual time management. You need to free yourself of this to really focus. In fact, you’ll find that it’s quite liberating and effective to just get down to work without being the slave of a clock or watch.

Look into time management courses at local community colleges or within your workplace. If you have a hard time juggling your schedule, you could learn quite a bit about how to limit your stress at work. Learning how to manage your time successfully from an experienced teacher will prove to be helpful.

Most people cannot accomplish everything they try to accomplish. Some days it’s impossible. Only a small percentage of your everyday duties will create great results. Set realistic goals and strive to accomplish them, but understand that sometimes it doesn’t happen that way.

It is okay to take a break once in awhile. You may feel overwhelmed or stressed by what you are doing. When this occurs, it is important to take a break and have a few minutes to yourself. This makes getting back to and completing the task much easier in the long run.

As you think about what you need to accomplish in a given day, order the tasks by importance. There are few better ways to sort out your day and prepare to work efficiently. Think about what needs to be done during the day. List the important things first, then the rest of your tasks. Then you will be able to start on projects of a lower priority.

Put time limits on the work you are doing. Sometimes just the act of putting a time limit on something will make you much more efficient. Even if it’s something that only take a few minutes, give it a time requirement. Write them down on your to-do list and see how effective it is during the day.

Give yourself a goal time for each task in your day. Be realistic as you delegate your time. Set the times that you should finish each task by and do your best to stick to it. Do not feel rushed if time becomes an issue, since lesser priorities are scheduled later in the day.

Keep your daily planner with you at all times. It does not matter if you keep one in print or if you use one on your mobile device. When you have your calendar accessible at all times, you will avoid time conflicts when you make appointments. This will help you be better organized.

Attempt to carry your list of things to do around with you. It will be a reminder when needed. Some tasks you have to complete may be stressful or emotional. These cause forgetfulness about the next task. By having a list, you can stay on track no matter the circumstances.

Complete the most urgent tasks first. If you’re trying to do all of your tasks at one time, you won’t be doing quality work. The tasks will not be done as well. When you stick to one till completed, your priority list will diminish successfully.

It can seem hard to do, but when you know the basics of time management, you can easily do it. Take advantage of each minute of each day with these tips. Eventually, you’ll have more free time.

Having Trouble Managing Time? Read These Helpful Tips

“Time management” is a phrase that is talked about time and time again as a way to reach success. And it’s true, managing your time in the right way can help you to be more organized and get things done. That’s why this article is full of suggestions to help you do just that. Read on!

Make use of a timer. If you wish to focus on a task, set a timer for the length of time you wish to spend concentrating on the task at hand. For instance, if you have an hour available to work, use the time to work for 15 minute increments until you have worked for the amount of time you have available.

When time is tight, start setting limits on how long it takes you to do things. For example, rather than browsing the Internet when you have to check email, just allow yourself five minutes to read and respond to your messages. Cut out the excess, stop wasting time and keep yourself on schedule.

If you find time management to be a struggle, attempt to get your day in order the night before. You can do this via an eventual to-do list made when the work day ends or a more thorough plan. Doing this helps you relax so that you are raring to go the following day.

It is important to plan your day in advance. Mundane tasks can eat up time in your daily schedule. Knowing what is important to you can help you organize your time. Create a to-do list that is sorted by priority.

Learn to let the little things go when you are overwhelmed by a busy day. People who tend to fuss over less important matters often lose their focus on the big picture, thus wasting time. Have your priorities straight and don’t allow small problems to get in the way of managing time efficiently.

The time you spend planning your day can help you keep yourself on time throughout it. Devote a few minutes each morning to mapping out your tasks and appointments, giving yourself at least 10 minutes between each. This helps to avoid rushing, and should help you to manage the total time you have to work in the day better.

Look into software programs that are meant to help with time management. Once it is set up, it will be quick and easy to plan how your time is spent. This software is meant to help and it will prove to be quite effective in how your time is spent each day.

If you’re constantly in a bind for time, start cutting people off. If you let them, your neighbors, co-workers and others will eat more time off the clock than you can afford. Learn how to say no or politely excuse yourself from conversations and other unnecessary situations so that you can devote quality time to your own priorities.
